First Possible Incident Heard

Listening to JFK Tower #3 today, a pilot reported a bird strike between about 1:30 and 2PM Central Daylight Time. It was on approach at about 50 feet. ATC gave them a phone number to call if they noticed any damage on the plane. No other planes saw any debris on the runway.

Bits for Mid June

 There were at least two, maybe three flights at JFK tonight that didn't switch their frequency away from Tower before greeting the other controller. That was a new mistake.  Today's accident of note is from January, 1973. It was a CFIT on approach to Edmonton of a cargo plane carrying 86 cattle. The cockpit section and a forward portion of the fuselage broke away and the 86 cattle shot forward through the open front section of the fuselage. They were found up to 100 meters from the aircraft. https://aviation-safety.net/asndb/330286 I could be wrong, but it's likely that these cattle were being transported somewhere to be turned into beef - in other words, their fate was imminent anyway. So, if they had to go out, that was quite the way to go. 

Early June Bits

ATC Bits Today, 09 Jun 2024, at JFK, there were balloons at 300 ft near one runway. Later, balloons were spotted around 1,000 ft.  Yesterday, 08 Jun 2024, in Atlanta, several pilots were not ready when called. Most needed to complete checklists. One had someone in the bathroom.  On Wednesday, 05 Jun 2024, a plane needed to pause at Denver for rabbit activity. The pilot responded with "we'll watch for those wascally wabbits." The controller chuckled. The crash investigation of note is one led by Ed Malinowski of an incident at Chicago Midway. A Southwest 737 was substantially damaged after hitting and knocking over a food service truck.  https://aviation-safety.net/wikibase/293380
